The restaurant is located in Carabbia, a hillside village just outside Lugano. It’s not the easiest place to reach without a car, but you can take bus 434 from Paradiso (Carabbia Al Canvetto stop). Another nice option is to visit Monte San Salvatore, then take the funicular down to Pazzallo and enjoy a 20-minute walk to the grotto. Grotto del Pep is a classic Ticinese grotto, offering traditional local dishes and grilled meats in a cozy setting. We started with a platter of mixed cold cuts from Ticino—each slice was excellent and of very high quality. For the main course, I chose polenta with brasato while my wife had polenta with porcini. Both came on the same plate, making it easy to share. The dishes may be simple, but they were perfectly cooked and full of flavor—the brasato was so tender it didn’t even require a knife. Portions were generous as well. Although we were already full, we couldn’t resist dessert. I had the tiramisu, which was light, fluffy, and delicious. The restaurant seemed very popular with locals, many of whom were ordering spareribs with potatoes, which looked fantastic. We visited on a Thursday at lunchtime without a reservation. The place was already quite busy, so if you’re planning to come for dinner, on a weekend, or with a larger group, booking a table is definitely recommended.
A classic grotto experience. The first time I came, the parking lot was full and so we didn't get a chance to try it. Our next attempt, we tried to book it, but it was full. On my third attempt, I walked in after doing the near by via ferrata with a friend, and it was a random weekday. It was so much more relaxed: only a few other people and we had time to linger and enjoy being outside, enjoying the nature and calmness. I just visited again this last weekend with my family and we booked, but they had space for walk-ins. Lots of families, just having slow leisurely lunches. The ribs are worth the hype (and shout out to the guy at the grill. He was so focused and hard working!). The rest of the service was ok. At first it wasn't very warm and we kind of felt like we were being treated like tourists, almost with disdain. Later, though, our hosts warmed up and were kinder, which was nice.
Omg. The ribs here are to die for! Fantastic food, friendly service, and a true grotto experience! Put this on your list as a must visit if you are down in Lugano for a visit! Sooooo good!
The food here was simple but delicious. We had two ribs, one lamb chops and the chips and the polenta. It was all very flavorful and would recommend as a lovely sharing family style lunch.
Everything was very good. We went there for lunch, the staff was very nice the bbq lamb was excellent, the portions are huge and prices are reasonable.
Oh my God the taste of the food here is Incredible. The portions are very good and the service is also very nice. If you are nearby and you like meat is a must try!
